Justice Bhattacharjee’s appointment, which was notified on July 30, comes at a time when the Meghalaya High Court is dealing with an increasing workload amid a relatively small bench.

With his induction, the total strength of judges in the High Court has now increased to four, including the Chief Justice himself.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by sitting judges, senior advocates, members of the Bar, and court officials, highlighting the significance of the occasion for the state’s legal fraternity.

Established in March 2013 following the bifurcation of the Gauhati High Court’s jurisdiction, the Meghalaya High Court is one of the youngest in the country.

It was carved out to cater exclusively to the legal needs of Meghalaya. Despite being relatively new, the court has been proactive in adjudicating on key matters such as land disputes, mining bans, and rights of tribal communities.

The High Court currently operates from its permanent building in Shillong and exercises jurisdiction over a broad range of civil, criminal, constitutional, and administrative cases arising from across the state.
